Chiropractic is key for the treatment and care of emotional illnesses

We at Van Every Family Chiropractic Center of Royal Oak, Michigan, care about your health and well-being and strive to provide you with current information in a variety of health topics!

Mental health and chiropractic
Did you know that, over a forty-year period, Doctors of Chiropractic and chiropractic schools operated nearly two hundred hospitals? They were built on the principal that chiropractic care, with proper subluxation correction, a healthy, nutritious diet, exercise, fresh air and sunlight, had powerful healing effects. (1)

What especially amazed clinicians were the beneficial effects chiropractic had on those suffering from “mental and emotional disorders.” Chiropractic care was especially helpful for people who suffered from anxiety, “nervous disorders” (as they were then called) and more severe forms of emotional illness.
In time the chiropractic profession owned and operated two hospitals devoted to mental health: Clear View Sanitarium and Forest Park Sanitarium, both in Davenport, Iowa. Over a 40-year period, the chiropractic hospitals had greater success than the state mental hospitals. (2)

The results so impressed North Dakota circuit court judge A.W. Ponath that he consistently refused to send a patient to the state mental hospital unless they first spent time in the chiropractic institution. (3)

Why? Because without drugs, surgery (pre-frontal lobotomies) and electric shock therapy, chiropractic promoted real brain health and had a greater healing success rate.

Today chiropractors see many patients suffering from anxiety, depression, addiction, ADD, ADHD, autism and other conditions related to a dysfunctioning nervous system. (4)

Chiropractors are specially trained to locate nerve interference (spinal nerve stress) and release or correct it. Once your nerve interference is released your nervous system, especially your brain and spinal cord, is able to communicate with all your body systems – your immune, digestive, circulatory, endocrine and muscular systems as well as all the rest – to help them function closer to their potential and to improve your natural healing ability. (5)

Everyone of us in this (often) stress-filled world needs to see a Doctor of Chiropractic for a chance to enjoy some drug-free healthcare and less stress in their lives – it could make a big difference for your physical and mental health.

Does an aspirin regimen help or hinder your health?

We at Van Every Family Chiropractic Center of Royal Oak, Michigan, care about your health and well-being and strive to provide you with current information in a variety of health topics!

Daily aspirin?
In 1988 research suggested that some high-risk patients who took daily aspirin had fewer heart attacks. Drug companies began pushing daily aspirin use and some medical doctors began “prescribing” aspirin to prevent heart attacks.

But recent findings reveal that people without a history of cardiovascular disease (such as heart attack or stroke) are unlikely to benefit from a regular dose of aspirin, given the associated risk of internal bleeding.

The researchers found that aspirin in conventional daily or alternate day doses reduced the risk of total non-fatal cardiovascular disease events by just 10% – but this benefit was offset by a 30% increase in risk of life-threatening internal bleeding events. Aspirin is not a safe drug (actually there is no drug without dangerous side-effects). Look at this:

* 1,600 children die each year from allergic reactions to aspirin
* Patients with blockage of arteries to the brain are three times more likely to have a stroke if they are taking aspirin
* Dyspepsia and gastrointestinal hemorrhage occur in 31% of those taking 300 mgs. of aspirin per day
* Low doses of aspirin can increase the risk of brain hemorrhage
* Other side effects can include anemia, bleeding ulcers, confusion and dizziness, and numerous other problems (7)

Chiropractic and ear infections

In this study, ear infections were found to recur more often if the child was originally treated with amoxicillin (an antibiotic). The researchers found that acute otitis media (middle ear infection) recurred in 63% (47/75) of children in the amoxicillin group compared to 43% (37/86) of the children in the placebo group. The authors write, “This is another argument for judicious use of antibiotics in children with acute otitis media.” (6)

This is another reason to bring your child in for chiropractic care especially if he/she has ear infections. Many clinical reports and studies have praised the drug-free, non-surgical chiropractic success with ear infections in children.

For example, in one study of 211 infants, examined 5 days after birth, who suffered from vomiting, hyperactivity and sleeplessness, chiropractic care frequently resulted in the immediate cessation of crying, muscular relaxation and sleepiness. The authors, who are medical doctors, wrote that an unhealthy spine "causes many clinical features from central motor impairment to lower resistance to infections – especially ear, nose and throat infections." They assert that all newborns should have their spines checked by chiropractors as "the success of adjustment overshadows every other type of [care]." (7)
